Does Your Body Know?

Several years ago I made it my quest to try and eat healthier. Oh I don't mean fanatically, but I decided to "go natural" as much as possible. The first thing I did was cut out soft drinks and drink water - lots of water! Next I cut down on the "white stuff" - white sugars, breads and foods high in those things. I lost twenty pounds in the process! Next I began to shop for "real food" - food that contained no preservatives or fillers etc. Then I cut out toxins that were harmful - foods containing gluten, corn syrup etc. Finally I opted fro non-GMO grown foods and finally organic. Fast foods were an occasional splurge but no longer a regular habit. It is amazing what I experienced as a result of this progression. My body knew the difference! Healthy food or "real food" as I like to call it, tasted SO much better! It was really like night and day. Now when I try to indulge in things containing a high sugar content, or even drink a soft drink, it just tastes way too sweet and I can't consume more than a bite or two or a sip or two as is the case. Anytime I get fast food or "comfort food," my body lets me know it wasn't the best decision the next day. I am bloated, lethargic and nauseous. I have an overall "yucky" feeling. So what about you? Can your tell a difference in the way you feel when you eat food not healthy as opposed to what is healthy?
I fully confess that the title might be misleading! After I typed it, I thought about when my son was an infant. A young man from our church was holding him and discovered his "soft spot" while rubbing his head. He became upset and thought there was something wrong with my baby. I explained to him that all babies have soft spots at first as their skulls and brains grow. He was relieved to say the least! The "soft spots" I'm thinking of now though are those places we have to "land" or "fall" to escape from the stresses of life. Everyone needs such a place or a person. There is no argument that it is good for one's emotional or mental health, but my personal experience is that a safe haven or soft spot is like medicine to my body. Last month was one of those "flare-up" months that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. A change in some of my supplements and medication put me in a tailspin. Several weeks into the flare-up, I connected with a loved one who took the time to listen, to laugh and to give me much needed TLC. I was amazed at the difference in my body. The fatigue diminished, the pain began to leave my body, energy returned. I felt like "me" again - not because of doctors, medications, sleep, diet or anything tangible. I had entered my safe place and stretched out on my "soft spot" and healing came! What do you think? The big "C" is something no one wants to have to face. I have watched its devastation personally on family members close to me. Scientists in California have developed a new computer program that can use blood samples to detect cancer. The program can detect tumor DNA and even locate where it is coming from in the body.
CancerLocator works by observing different molecular patterns in DNA and comparing the patterns to genetic modifications known to be caused by different types of cancer.
It was developed by a team from the University of California at Los Angeles.
“Non-invasive diagnosis of cancer is important, as it allows the early diagnosis of cancer, and the earlier the cancer is caught, the higher chance a patient has of beating the disease,” said Professor Jasmine Zhou, co-lead author of the study.
“We have developed a computer-driven test that can detect cancer, and also identify the type of cancer, from a single blood sample. The technology is in its infancy and requires further validation, but the potential benefits to patients are huge.”
The team tested the program with 29 liver cancer patients, 12 lung cancer patients, and five breast cancer patients. When it came to the test results and accuracy of cancer detection, the new program had an error rate of 0.265, which is twice as accurate as any program created in the past.
“Owing to the limited number of blood samples, the results of this study are evaluated only on three cancer types (breast, liver, and lung),” Zhou told The Independent.
“In general, the higher the fraction of tumor DNAs in blood, the more accurate the program was at producing a diagnostic result. I hope [a diagnostic test] will be available within a year. It depends on training data, testing, and machine learning. With enlarged training and testing data, we are confident to achieve much higher performance."
As a person dealing with chronic pain due to fibromyalgia, neuropathy and degenerative disc disease, I think I've tried every medicine under the sun both FDA approved, holistic and everything in between. While some of them have helped in the short-term, I've found that over time my body simply becomes immune to the medication and it the medication becomes less and less effective. There are two "medicines" however, that I've found to be tried and true. One comes straight from the old adage - "laughter is the best medicine." Ancient scripture even states: "A merry heart does good like a medicine." Once when I was suffering from a migraine, nothing had eased the pain. I was talking with my son when something humorous happened. We began to laugh hysterically! Once the laughter subsided, I found something else had subsided - my headache! The endorphins had done their job.
Another "medicine" that has proved itself to me is sleep. People with fibromyalgia struggle with deep level sustained sleep. I often wake feeling just as tired as when I went to bed the night before. However, when I am able to relax my body and clear my mind, as well as eat properly, I catch a rare night of "blissful" sleep. Forgive the pun, but it is like a "night and day" difference for me. I find my pain level low to non-existent and my energy level much higher than my "normal." Sleep is honestly and without question the best medicine for me. What about you? Can you tell a difference?
